This quietly beautiful story is inspired by the life of painter Maud Lewis, as she is struggles for independence and self-expression.

An ad in the local shop placed by Everett Lewis looking for a housekeeper promises escape from a life with her uncaring family, but she finds in Everett a difficult, reclusive man; stony faced and set in his ways. Over time the two misfits find ways to live together, and slowly and carefully an unlikely romance forms.

Maudie, bright-eyed and crippled with arthritis finds solace from their austere life by painting colourful scenes from nature on any space she can find. Creating beauty from despair, her work begins to become known locally then internationally as moving examples of folk art.
